Benefits of Elementary School Music Programs

Elementary school music programs are the foundation of many students’ introduction to the world of music. In their music classes, students are exposed to instruments, music, and concepts that can spark their interests for a lifetime. An introduction to one song or instrument has the potential to inspire children. Effective elementary school music programs can make a difference in their students’ lives.
Elementary school music programs introduce children to instruments and help to foster an appreciation for them. In basic music classes, children learn about percussion, woodwind, string, and brass instruments. They get to experiment with these instruments. With their early introduction to these instruments, some children make the decision that they want to learn to play the drums, violin, cello, or flute, for instance. Because of their early introduction to instruments, some children even become professional musicians or conductors.
Additionally, children’s exposure to instruments helps them to develop music appreciation skills. Students are able to go to a symphony and hear an instrument’s sound and can learn to identify it because of the groundwork established in an elementary school classroom. Beyond being able to identify the instruments, they can go to a symphony and simply enjoy the music.
In an elementary school music classroom, children learn to use their bodies as instruments. They learn the value of snapping their fingers, clapping their hands, stomping their feet, tapping on their thighs, and other body parts to establish a rhythm or beat. Also, when using their bodies to follow or understand musical notes, rhythm, time, and tempo, children’s appreciation of their abilities and music continues to increase.
Not only do children learn to appreciate instruments in elementary school music programs, but they learn to appreciate the music made by instruments and voices. Children in elementary school can be more open to listening and learning about various music types. Whereas a child may be resistant to listening to opera with his parents, he or she may be more interested in listening to it and enjoying it in an academic setting surrounded by his or her peers.
Students are exposed to various music genres in their music classes. By interacting with various types of music and music from different cultures, elementary school music programs offer students a multicultural music experience. Since they hear and sing songs from various cultures in their music classes, their exposure to other cultures’ music can cause students to be more receptive and better prepared to learn more about these cultures in their social studies, history, and language arts classes.
Learning about music in elementary school is fun. Children get to sing, play instruments, and dance, too. Although the music classroom is an academic environment, the subject matter is creative, compelling, inspiring, and interactive. Students enrolled in elementary school music programs benefit from the information they learn, as well as the music they hear and create.

Catrese LaJoy Green was born April 14, 1975, in Rocky Mount, NC and grew up in the small town of Sharpsburg, 5 miles further south. She got her pseudonym from her grandmother who nicknamed her “Minnesota Fats” because she was a chubby baby. The nickname was shortened to Mini and has stuck with her over the years. Mini began singing with her father, Bobby Green, in a Top 40 band called “Electric Image” in 1990. The band traveled throughout the southern United States performing for many different types of audiences. With the band she was exposed to and performed music from the R&B, Country, Blues and Jazz genres. She has covered songs by Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Shania Twain, Alicia Keyes, The Supremes and more. After traveling with the band for more than 15 years, Mini longed to step out of her father’s shadow. She left the band in 2006 but put her music on hold while she explored other career paths. In 2009, she married and began to reevaluate her life. This reflection led her back to her first love, music.

Presently, Mini spends her days in her home studio writing music and lyrics. She aspires to become one of the premier songwriters of our time. Currently her songs are published on Sonicbids.com. You can hear them by going to her personal Electronic Press Kit at

Her hard hitting song “Who She Is” has become a local success and is beginning to create buzz on the web. You may also follow her on her blog at

Historical Elements Of The Flute

1

Posted by admin | Posted in kids entertainment | Posted on 29-12-2011

The flute is the oldest musical instrument to be firmly dated. The flute’s earliest probable history dates back to approximately 900 B.C. They are the earliest known musical instruments and is one among the three celebrated musical instruments of India (the other two are veena and mridanga).
Flutes are of different kinds and their lengths and number of holes vary. Flutes in the baroque and early classical periods had few keys. It is a musical instrument of the woodwind group and has also always been an essential part of Indian culture and mythology. The cross flute, believed by several accounts, to originate in India as Indian literature from 1500 BCE has made vague references to the cross flute.
It made it’s first appearance in Europe after having been a favorite instrument in India and China. Todays flute, thanks to Boehm, born in 1794, the son of a goldsmith, is responsible for the flute of today.
The flute is made in the form of an open cylindrical air column about 66 cm long and has a series of 16 openings in the tube wall, 11 of which can be closed directly by seven fingers and one by the left thumb.
The flute can usually be disassembled into three sections: the head joint (which includes the mouthpiece), the middle joint, and the foot joint. The flute family is also the most widespread aerophone family, with representatives in more Non-Western music traditions around the world than any other non-percussion instrument.
The instrument is held in a horizontal position with a slight downward inclination. It is played parallel to the ground on the right side of the musician. The flute is the only woodwind instrument held crosswise, parallel to the shoulders.
It is also a very versatile musical instrument, it can play solo or be responsible for carrying the melody. The flute family is a large family of instruments that includes widely-recognized instruments such as the orchestral flute and piccolo, panpipes, and recorders, as well as unusual instruments such as nose flutes and ocarinas.
The flute dropped the name ‘transverse’ when it became the universally used instrument of its family in orchestras, chamber ensembles and for solo works. The flute sound has fewer types of harmonic vibration than almost any other instrument, and this is the main factor in the production of its distinctive tone.
The flute, a woodwind, is atypically a metal instrument. It can be found in orchestras sharing melodies with the violin, but the flute will always be a solo instrument at its best. It is the smallest and highest pitched beginning band instrument.
It is also a member of the wind ensemble, woodwind ensemble, and the woodwind quintet, in which it performs along with clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and French horn. The flutes are the oldest category of woodwind instrument. It is sometimes called a woodwind and sometimes called a brass instrument.

Introducing your child to music

MUSIC TO YOUR LITTLE ONE’S EARS
Singing is good for you and your child
Do you sing songs with your child? Sadly it seems more and more children are missing out on the benefits of singing at home with their parents and carers.
Music is not only enjoyable, extensive research shows that exposing young children to music and singing stimulates their intelligence and emotional development.
Young children love music; and songs not only soothe them or make them laugh, they are also a fun way to learn. Playing songs and encouraging your child to sing along can develop their vocabulary, increase their confidence and give them a great head start when they begin full-time education. Recent research by Youth Music, the UK’s largest children’s music charity, shows that enjoying music together and singing songs can help to develop communication, concentration and social skills in under 5s.
Joining in with songs helps build a child’s self-expression, creativity and confidence. Picking up the basics of rhythm, tempo and pitch will help to develop their musicality too.
Tune in to your toddler with these tips
• Introduce your child to a wide variety of songs to build their knowledge of words. Let them listen to all kinds of songs and see what they like best. Don’t just restrict them to nursery rhymes, try folk and pop, but make sure the words are appropriate. • Teach your child short, but fun songs – getting them to learn some simple, repetitive lyrics will develop their listening and concentration skills. • Use songs to help calm your baby or get your toddler to relax for naptime. • If your chid is sleepy in the morning play a cheery song to make them want to get moving. • Children love routine and making songs part of routines makes activities fun. Songs are a great way to help children prepare for transitions from one activity to another, such as tidying up and putting their things away. • Sing together while doing chores or driving somewhere in the car. It’s a good way to build your child’s self esteem especially if you let them choose their favourite songs. • Remember to praise your child after you have both been singing and this will help boost their confidence. • Why not learn songs together and have a family sing-a-long?

Download Festival history

Posted by admin | Posted in entertainment | Posted on 26-12-2011

The first Download Festival was held in 2003. The headliners were originally Iron Maiden and Limp Bizkit, although Limp Bizkit pulled out and were replaced by Audioslave. Metallica attempted to step in as headliners, but were unable due to already being headliners at that year’s Reading and Leeds Festivals. Instead, they played an unannounced “secret slot” in the afternoon on the second stage.

Seventy-two bands played over the two days. The 2004 event was also noticeable for several last minute hitches. Firstly, SOiL got lost on the way to Donington and missed their main stage appearance on Saturday (they later joined Drowning Pool on stage to perform Drowning Pool’s “Bodies” and their own song “Halo”). Static-X missed their slot due to a bus breakdown. On Sunday, Slayer arrived on time, but their equipment did not, leading to a slot change from the middle of the afternoon on the main stage to a later slot (and longer set) on the second stage. Slayer were replaced on the main stage by Damageplan, who were scheduled to play the second stage. Their setlist ended with a rendition of Damageplan founders Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell’s most recognisable song from Pantera, “Walk.”
The biggest news came from the headliners Metallica, however, when Lars Ulrich was rushed to hospital.[1] Taking to the stage an hour and a half late, James Hetfield explained the situation with Lars and the show began with Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo playing on “Battery” and “The Four Horsemen.” Slipknot’s Joey Jordison played the rest of the set apart from Fade to Black which was played by Metallica’s drum technician, Flemming Larsen. The set featured no post-”Black Album” songs and was about an hour and ten minutes long: short for a headliner. The set is considered one of the band’s most memorable performances.[citation needed]

Scotland In June 2004 a two day Download Festival was held on Glasgow Green, several days before the Donington event. This had a limited line up with only nine bands performing over a two day period. However, the bands which did play were similar to those appearing at Donington including the headliners, Metallica and Linkin Park. Download Scotland also saw an appearance from the Welsh rock band Lostprophets who were unique to the event and did not perform at Donington.
Acts which also appeared over the two days at Download Scotland were Korn, Slipknot, Iggy and The Stooges, Machine Head, The Distillers and HIM.
The running order went as follows:
Day 1 Day 2 Metallica Slipknot Korn HIM Linkin Park Lostprophets The Stooges The Distillers Machine Head [edit] Download 2005 A view of the Main stage at Download Festival 2005Download 2005 was held again at Donington Park, on 10-12 June 2005. This festival was different from previous years as the Saturday was officially dubbed Ozzfest 2005, as well as an “Indie day” on the first day of the festival.
Billy Idol performed on the Snickers stage on the Friday night; his first UK gig after a lengthy hiatus, performing songs such as White Wedding, Rebel Yell and a cover version of Van Halen’s anthem, Jump.
Feeder’s frontman Grant Nicholas was so relieved the band won the crowd over (there were concerns that they would be received badly by the traditional attendee to the festival), he decided to smash his green Fender Jazzmaster guitar after “Descend” was performed. He later said that he regretted it, but also said he kept the neck and the tremeloes, and might use what was left to make a new guitar. A part of the body was thrown to a member of the crowd.
Lemmy also took to the stage, with former MC5 members, and Gilby Clarke, to perform Back in the USA.
Sleaze Metal band Crashdiet played their first and so far only show in the UK on the Napster Stage
Initially, Bert McCracken of The Used and Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance were asked to perform their cover of Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie, but the former friends refused the offer to perform the cover as they had recently fallen out.

One memorable moment of the festival was the announcement that Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis had been rushed to hospital. Similar to 2004′s Metallica set, Munky, Fieldy and David Silveria arrived and explained to the fans why Jonathan couldn’t make it and played with guest vocalists Corey Taylor from Slipknot, Dez Fafara from DevilDriver, Jesse Hasek from 10 Years, Benji Webbe from Skindred, M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold, and Matt Heafy from Trivium. Lyrics from from the song “Blind” were displayed on the screen because Matt Heafy could not remember all the words. Another talking point of the festival was Metallica playing the album Master of Puppets in its entirety in honour of its twentieth anniversary. Guns N’ Roses also performed material from the long forthcoming Chinese Democracy album which was received quite well by the crowd.

The three bands that headlined the 2007 festival were My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park and Iron Maiden. My Chemical Romance’s announcement as headliners caused much disappointment with fans looking forward to a heavier lineup.
Through February, March and the beginning of April, more bands were announced in small groups of five or six,[12] and on 17 April this lineup was arranged into days and stages on the official website.[13] A further announcement of fifteen bands on 24 April added to this lineup, and announced the names of the second and third stages – The Dimebag Darrell Stage, and The Tuborg Stage.[14]
Korn’s Jonathan Davis stated that the reason for the band returning this year, was because of his absence due to illness last year. He states on the official Download Festival website, “I am so looking forward to coming to the Download Festival this year. I was heartbroken to pull out last time. So this time I am very happy to be coming back and we promise to rock the place! I will definitely make-up for missing the last one. You can expect an amazing Korn show!”[15]
Download 2007 was Dimmu Borgir’s first ever festival appearance in England. Hardcore Superstar pulled out of their slot on the Tuborg stage on the Sunday because their tour bus broke down in Germany.
Download 2007 also featured the first band to officially perform on the Thursday of the festival. Scumface played on the Tuborg Stage during the boardie barbecue.[16]
Lamb Of God’s DVD Walk With Me In Hell features the band’s full performance at the festival.[17]

Action! In This Moment The Ghost of a Thousand LostAlone The 2008 Download festival took place on June 13 to June 15. The 2008 festival had a significantly different layout to that of the previous years in that the festival arena area was situated in land to the west of the race track instead of the traditional venue of the race track infield area. Notable amongst numerous changes is that the second, ‘Tuborg’, stage became larger and moved from a marquee to an open-air format, located on a tarmac car park.[18] Chris Cornell was originally scheduled to play the festival, but he cancelled his European tour so he could focus on a new album. Twin Method and Finger Eleven were announced to play but were removed from the official websites lineup. On the Friday of the festival, Kid Rock was meant to appear between Seether and Disturbed on the Main Stage but pulled out at the last minute. At first it was announced that this was due to illness, but it was later revealed he left the festival grounds after becoming dissatisfied with the amenities.[19] This allowed the two bands, Disturbed and Judas Priest, to have longer sets.
