Gregory Vajda and the Oregon Symphony really know how to throw some unusual ingredients in the musical mixing bowl to whip up an outstanding concert. As the resident conductor explained in his introductory remarks on Saturday evening (November 21) at the Schnitz, the concert opened and closed with engaging overtures by Mendelssohn and Berlioz and the middle of the program was spiced with works by Mozart and Dutilleux that juxtaposed a small ensemble with a larger one and showed off some expert playing by the principal players in the orchestra.

The orchestra featured four of its wind principals in Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante,” a work that has been reconstructed by Mozart scholar and pianist Robert Levin. Delivering a finely nuanced performance were principals David Buck, flute; John Cox, horn; Martin Hebert, oboe; and Carin Miller, bassoon. They seamlessly passed musical phrases between each other, creating a witty conversation between themselves and the orchestra. Much of the piece had a chirpy, happy-go-lucky mood and each soloist sparkled, maintaining a balanced sound through numerous tempo and volume changes.

Henri Dutilleux’s Second Symphony (“La Double”) is a modern concerto grosso that is scored for an ensemble of 12 players and orchestra. In this concert, a dozen of the orchestra’s principals (including harpsichord, celesta, and timpani) were seated in front and the rest of the ensemble surrounded them. The piece accented a lot of interplay between the two groups. Sometimes an idea seemed to emerge from the principals and be expounded upon by the larger orchestra, but at other times the ideas seemed go in the other direction. One set of notes that was sprinkled in each of the three movements was a phrase that bubbled up from principal clarinetist Yoshinori Nakao. It seemed like a question mark and helped to give this work a haunting and mysterious quality.

The concert opened with the overture to “Die schöne Melusine” (“The Fair Melusina”) by Felix Mendelssohn. I really enjoyed the silky sound from the violins, the floaty line from the woodwinds, and the surges of sound that the orchestra created so easily. As the program notes pointed out, the theme at the beginning of the piece had a gentle ascending melody that Richard Wagner stole to portray the Rhine river in his opera “Das Rheingold.”.
